Starting in July 2024, Microsoft Azure is beefing up security with some new tenant-level measures, including mandatory multi-factor authentication (MFA). This move is all about making the cloud platform even more secure and keeping unauthorized users out.

MFA is a big deal for managing who gets access to what. It makes sure that only the right people can get into services and resources.

The rollout will kick off through the Azure portal and also cover PowerShell and Terraform, but won’t affect Azure-hosted apps, websites, or services. We will need to tackle Break Glass Accounts, and review those service accounts that we have in tenant to see how this change will affect.

Admins will have the flexibility to tweak MFA settings using Entra ID Conditional Access policies. Plus, there will be dedicated reports and tools to monitor how things are going.

This is all part of Microsoft’s Secure Future Initiative, aimed at ramping up security and preventing data breaches.

To help you keep users and data safe, MFA is now available and free for you to enable at the tenant level. You can set up MFA today with the MFA wizard for Microsoft Entra.
