ADMX Templates for Microsoft Edge

With the irruption of W10 in business, a new browser has been introduced, Microsoft Edge. But, for IT departments, the available policies to configure Edge (I’m sure that you already have noticed that) are not the same as Internet Explorer.

So… what you can do? You can follow thw following procedure:

Download the latest version of registry-based Administrative Templates (.admx) for Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016 (from January 2017  https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=53430).

Administrative Templates (.admx) for Windows 10 Creators Update https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=55080

To install new .admx files, run the file Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016 ADMX.msi

  • If you want to manage Microsoft Edge settings using local Group Policy, copy all content (or only two files: admx and MicrosoftEdge.adml) from a folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Group Policy\Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016 to the local directory C:\Windows\PolicyDefinitions.
  • If you want to use new administrative templates to manage Edge settings on a computers in the AD domain, copy the content of a local folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Group Policy\Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016  to Central Store folder on the domain controller (for example, \\com\SYSVOL\theitbros.com\Policies\PolicyDefinitions). Now you create a new domain GPOs with Edge settings using Group Policy Management Console (GPMC)

After installing a new administrative templates under section Computer Configuration -> Administrative Template -> Windows Components -> Microsoft Edge, you will get 20 different settings available.

So, now the remaining thing is to configure all the new policies that you want to apply to these new users.

Hope that helps!

How to force Windows 10 to download the Fall Creators Update

Since last week it has been weird at the office, while my colleagues were downloading the new Update which allows to use the new features of OneDrive On Demand, I was complaining of how impossible it was to receive the Falls Creator Update on ithe computer.

I know that it is a gradual rollout, so not everyone will get the update on day one (as it can be seen). As far as we know, Microsoft will slowly ramp up the release, but if you don’t want to wait (like me 🙂 ), you can get the latest and greatest update by forcing it.

If you want to force the update, you can visit the following link: https://www.microsoft.com/es-es/software-download/windows10 and click the button update now. Then a verification process will begin to check if you’re system is ready to receive the new update, If it is ready, the download process will begin.

I want to give a piece of advise fefore starting updating your system, the update process take soooooo long, so be patient 😉

Force Upgrade from W8.1 to W10

Hi!!

Today I will talk about something total different to SharePoint, how these days lot of people are in holidays, it allows me to upgrade some SharePoint servers and patches, but at the same time it allows me to upgrade my laptop. This time I was spending some time trying to update the laptop to W10.

How some of the updates are controlled by domain policy rules, I had to force the updated, so I will explain my steps and hopefully will help some people, here we go!

Firstly, check and install all posible updates from W8

Secondly, clean the following folder: C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionDownload

Thirdly, press Windows+R and execute the following command: wuauclt.exe /updatenow

If any of these solutions triggers the W10 upgrade, try the following (it worked for me and for a colleague 🙂 ). Go to the Windows registry (remember REGEDIT), and go to:

Local Machine/ Software/  Microsoft/ Windows/ CurrentVersion/ WindowsUpdate/ OSUpgrade and inside this folder créate a new DWord32 Bits entry with the name: AllowOSUpgrade and with the value 1. After that check the Windows Update in control panel and if everthing is correct, you will be able to start downloading W10 🙂

Good luck!
